Prescient – innovation powered by Access Copyright – reveals its plans for a creator-focused digital ecosystem

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

October 17, 2018 – Access Copyright, a collective voice of creators and publishers in Canada, is pleased to announce the launch of Prescient Innovations Inc.

Prescient is a creator-focused innovation lab dedicated to exploring the future of rights management and content monetization. The organization, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Access Copyright, is leveraging exponential technologies to build a dynamic, new ecosystem for creators and rightsholders – including writers, publishers, visual artists and photographers – and their audiences that will change the way creators engage with audiences and share their creative work.

“This is truly the golden age of content consumption, but the Internet isn’t working for all creators,” said Roanie Levy, President and CEO, Access Copyright, and CEO, Prescient. “We recognize that emerging technologies hold the potential to change this for creators and Prescient is at the vanguard of this movement.”

From its inception, three critical questions have informed Prescient’s approach: What if the Internet did work for all creators? What if users could easily identify trusted content? What if the exchange of value generated by content was transparent?

This is the new world of content rights management developing today, powered by exponential technologies like blockchain and machine learning. In the world of Web 4.0, new business models and revenue streams can emerge. This is good news for creators, publishers and audiences as well.

The Prescient team is currently developing an open, transparent and auditable distributed ledger that will attribute a creative work to its rightful creators and rightsholders. To demonstrate the value of such a ledger and to seed its adoption, Prescient is collaborating with other creator associations on innovative use cases for the ledger, such as the provenance of visual art.

“A new ecosystem is developing that will evolve the way content creators, publishers and audiences interact with trusted content. In the process, the exchange of value will shift. Prescient’s work and strategic partnerships ensure the needs of creators, publishers, rightsholders and users are at the forefront,” said Levy.

About Access Copyright

Who We Are

Access Copyright is a collective voice of creators and publishers in Canada. A non-profit, national organization, we represent tens of thousands of Canadian writers, visual artists and publishers, and their works.

Through agreements with sister organizations around the world we also represent the works of hundreds of thousands of foreign creators and publishers. This rich repertoire of content is highly valued, by educators, students, researchers, corporate employees and others who need to copy and share content.

What We Do

We license the copying of this repertoire to educational institutions, businesses, governments and others. The proceeds gathered when content is copied, remixed and shared are passed along to the copyright-holders.

These investments help to ensure the continued creation of new and innovative works.
