Access Copyright

Licensing Solutions for the Public and Not-for-Profit Sector

Photocopied materials are integral to many businesses, whether they are used to distribute information to staff, to train and upgrade skills, to retain information for archival purposes, to monitor public relations, or to conduct research. Prior to copying, businesses need to secure permission from the copyright owner, but the administrative work behind securing permissions to copy or scan these works can be tedious and time consuming. An Access Copyright licence does that work so you don't have to.

Benefits of a licence
An Access Copyright licence gives you:

  • Quick and easy access to print and digital works from creators and publishers across Canada and around the world
  • Confidence that you are meeting your obligations under copyright law and that you are legally copying works – with no tracking required
  • The assurance that copyright owners are receiving payment for their work
  • An indemnity against any related costs and damages arising from litigation, when you are in compliance with the licence, in the unlikely event that you are sued for copyright infringement

Not-for-profit organization licences
With an Access Copyright licence, not-for-profit organizations and professional associations can make copies from books, newspapers, periodicals and journals to meet their organizational mandates.

Municipal licences
An Access Copyright licence offers quick and easy access to millions of works from copyright owners around the world, the assurance that copyright owners are receiving payment for the reproduction of their work, a direct way to show respect for and support of Canada's creative community, and indemnity against related costs and damages arising from potential litigation.

Federal and provincial licences
Access Copyright licenses the Federal and some provincial governments to ensure that the copying done by government employees during the course of everyday business is carried out legally, and that copyright owners receive fair payment for the use of their works.

With an Access Copyright licence, government employees no longer need to contact individual copyright owners in order to negotiate permission to copy. The licence provides advance permission for most copying needs, with immediate access to materials and reduced administrative costs.

Public library photocopying licence
Legal photocopying of published works by library patrons and staff is simple and straightforward with an Access Copyright Public Library Photocopying Licence.

Under the licence, libraries receive permission in advance for most copying by payment of photocopying royalties that Access Copyright distributes to authors and publishers. The model licence for public libraries was developed in consultation with representatives of the Council for Large Urban Public Libraries (CALUPL), the Provincial and Territorial Library Directors' Council (PTLDC) and Access Copyright. The licence ensures that copyright owners are compensated for the use of their works while allowing libraries to legally meet the needs of their patrons.
