By an order of the Federal Court of Canada, Access Copyright took possession of expensive photocopying equipment and confiscated copyright infringing coursepacks and textbooks from a Toronto based copy shop located near the University of Toronto, St. George campus.

As part of its mandate, Access Copyright routinely monitors copy shops across the country for evidence of illegal photocopying. The seizure was the result of Access Copyright’s repeated efforts to stop Quality Control Copy Centre from making illegal copies of coursepacks and textbooks, activities that are essentially robbing revenues from Canadian publishers and authors.

“Copyright in Canada must be safeguarded, the hard work of authors and publishers must be protected,” said Maureen Cavan, Executive   Director, Access Copyright. “The permission granted by the Federal Court to seize Quality Control’s assets shows that the courts are serious about upholding Canadian copyright laws.”

Access Copyright confiscated over 50 boxes of illegally photocopied course packs and textbooks, covering 75 university courses from four Ontario universities. “Purchasing pirated textbooks is essentially buying stolen property,” continued Cavan. “If the price of a textbook or coursepack sounds too good to be true, it most likely was produced illegally. I urge students to be ethical and buy these items legally from a reputable source.”
