On September 18, 2009, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a “Statement of Interest” with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that criticized several aspects of the Google Book Settlement.
Consequently, Google, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers asked the court for time to revise the Google Book Settlement. On October 7, 2009, the court granted this request. The parties now have until November 13, 2009 to submit a revised Settlement Agreement to the court for preliminary approval.
The court also extended the deadline for rightsholders to make a claim for works already digitized by Google from January 5, 2010 to June 5, 2010. The claim form can be completed online by clicking here.
It is difficult to say how these developments will affect the next steps of the Google Book Settlement process. We will continue to keep you updated as new information becomes available.
