2014 Payback payment released

Thursday, November 20, 2014

Access Copyright has released this year's Payback payments to eligible creator affiliates. The 2014 base payment for writers and visual artists is $112.75. In addition to the base payment, eligible affiliates who submitted a claim form within the past five years will receive a supplementary payment that depends on the genre of work published (books, magazines, scholarly journals), how much has been published and when it has been published.

All writers and visual artists affiliated with Access Copyright as of December 31, 2013 will receive a payment this year. If you’d like to tweet about your payment, please use hashtag #ACPayback. If you have any questions about your payment, please email affiliates@accesscopyright.ca

This year’s Payback base payment is 22.9% lower than last year. The decline is primarily because of the education sector’s self-interpretation of “fair dealing” which has led elementary and secondary schools as well as many universities and colleges to stop paying royalties to writers, visual artists and publishers for copying that would normally be made under an Access Copyright licence.

We take this challenge seriously and have worked hard to make the case that educational “fair dealing” must be fair to everyone who uses, shares, creates and publishes content.  You can help get the message out by:

  1. Watching our video calling for balance in educational fair dealing.

  2. Sharing the video on your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) using this link: http://ow.ly/EBkZg and the hashtag #FairDealingBalance. Ask your followers to like, favourite or re-tweet your post.
  3. Forwarding a link to the video to any educators you may know.
  4. Send a link to the video to your MP, telling him or her that this issue is important to you and to the continuation of quality Canadian educational content in our classrooms and lecture halls. (Find your local MP’s email at www.parl.gc.ca).
